Basic  Life Insurance

Company-paid basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance for you decreases as you hit certain ages as shown below.

  • Age 65: Your life insurance coverage decreases to 65% of the original amount.
  • Age 70: Your life insurance coverage decreases to 45% of the original amount.
  • Age 75: Your life insurance coverage decreases to 30% of the original amount.
  • Age 80: Your life insurance coverage decreases to 20% of the original amount.

The cost of optional life insurance for you and your spouse or domestic partner increases at ages 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 or older.

The cost of long-term disability insurance for you increases at ages 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 or older.

If you are age 50 to 59 in 2025 and are making the maximum plan or IRS contribution, you can make additional “catch-up contributions” up to $7,500 in 2025. For example, if you will turn age 50 on December 2, 2025, you are eligible to make additional catch up contributions at any time in 2025 if you are making the maximum plan or IRS contribution to the 401(k) Plan.

If you are age 60 to 63 in 2025 and are making the maximum plan or IRS contribution, the IRS allows you to make “super catch-up contributions” in the amount of $11,250 in 2025. Albertsons Companies is planning to implement this new super catch-up contribution provision beginning July 1, 2025.

If you are age 64 or older in 2025 and are making the maximum plan or IRS contribution, you can make additional “catch-up contributions” up to $7,500 in 2025.

In the year in which you turn 55, you can start making catch-up contributions to your HSA. In 2025, that means you can contribute an additional $1,000 to your HSA on top of the existing contribution limit.

Medical Insurance as You Age

For the most part, your medical insurance doesn’t change based on your age, but recommended preventive care and testing might change as you get older. Check with your primary care physician each time you hit a birthday milestone to see if there are any preventive tests they recommend to keep you in tip-top shape.

Coverage for Dependent Children

The big birthday to be aware of for dependent children you cover on your health plans is 26. Once your dependent children turn 26, they will be automatically dropped from your Albertsons health coverage at the end of the month in which they turn 26. The exception is disabled dependent children for whom you have applied for an exception – see the Eligibility page for details.
